NIH's eRA IMPAC II system supports a $13 billion
biomedical research program that is administered by
3,500 people. This enterprise level software consists of
dozens of IT applications working together to support
the grant officers and reviewers within NIH. The NIH
executive management team realized that the current
ORACLE based client server solution is not a robust one
and wanted to explore upgrading the technology to a more
robust one like J2EE. The combination of people,

Capital One
CapitalOne, based in Richmond, VA, and with
facilities throughout North America, is one of the
largest issuers of credit cards in the United States. In
1998, Capital One was in the midst of a major IT
initiative to convert its mainframe based Billing System
to a more robust multi-tiered CORBA based technology. In
addition to meeting the challenges of this new
technology, Capital One executives wanted to expand into
the Northern Virginia area in order to utilize a larger
